EISCAT Facility Status

Tromsø VHF Radar

Status: OK. Cooling system is fixed, but it turns out 5 of 8 radiators have limited or no flow, meaning cooling isn’t at full capacity. This might cause problems when running both radars or on hot days. The problem will be investigated as soon as schedules allow.

Tromsø UHF Radar

Status: The UHF radar is operational as of today. The missing panel was replaced yesterday. Cooling system: see VHF.

EISCAT Svalbard Radar (ESR)

Last Update: 2025-02-26
Status: Due to a burnt-out voltage regulator, ESR transmitter for both dishes is inoperable. The new voltage regulator has been ordered in early October. Spare parts for ESR are supposed to be shipped during week 9 or 10, with arrival on site TBC.

32-m dish: Due to gearbox failure, the 32-m dish cannot move and can be operated only in the zenith position (elevation 90°). New gearbox and new motor have arrived and have been installed.
Next steps: job safety review to ensure safe operation, on-going.

42-m dish: OK.

Tromsø Heating

Status: Array 2 operational with 4 transmitters (1, 7, 8, 9).

Kiruna VHF Receiver

As of January 2023, the Kiruna receiver for the VHF radar is off-line. The Kiruna antenna was removed in October 2024.

Sodankylä VHF Receiver

As of September 2023, the Sodankylä receiver for the VHF radar is off-line. The Sodankylä antenna will be removed in April 2025.

EISCAT_3D Skibotn

Last update: 2025-02-26
Status: Antenna array deployed.
Pending: Start permit for site.
Next step: Installation of receiver and transmitter electronics for seven antenna units, the so-called “NO-7” system. More ground works to stabilise the surroundings of the site.

EISCAT_3D Kaiseniemi

Last update: 2024-03-20
Status: Antenna array deployed.
Completed: PET system moved from Kiruna site to Kaiseniemi site for further testing. Receiver electronics for SE-7 installed, testing and debugging on-going.
Next step: Stress-test for SE-7, continuous reception, data throughput etc.

EISCAT_3D Karesuvanto

Status: Antenna array deployed.
Next step: installation of receiver electronics.
