EISCAT_3D at Karesuvanto, situated in northern Finland, is another key site within the EISCAT_3D radar system. Together with the core site at Skibotn and the one in Kaiseniemi, EISCAT_3D Karesuvanto helps form a unique system capable of observing the upper atmosphere in three dimensions.

The site’s location beneath the auroral oval makes it particularly well suited for studying auroras and the space weather processes that drive them. Using advanced radar technology, EISCAT_3D at Karesuvanto can follow rapid changes in the ionosphere and reveal how energy from the Sun is transferred into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Data from the Karesuvanto site, combined with measurements from the rest of the EISCAT_3D sites, allow scientists to investigate complex atmospheric structures and their evolution over time. This contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamic space environment and its potential effects on satellites, communication systems and navigation technologies.

EISCAT_3D Karesuvanto is an important long-term investment in research infrastructure, supporting cutting-edge science, education and international collaboration for many years to come.
