Projects

EISCAT has participated in several European Union research and infrastructure projects, spanning data management, research infrastructure collaboration and technology development.

EISCAT is an international research infrastructure headquartered in Kiruna, Sweden, dedicated to the study of Earth’s upper atmosphere, ionosphere and near-Earth space environment. Using advanced incoherent scatter radar technology located across northern Scandinavia and Svalbard, EISCAT’s facilities support a broad range of scientific investigations into space-weather processes, atmospheric physics and their impacts on global systems. The association collaborates with research institutions and infrastructures throughout Europe and beyond.

Current project involvement

RI-SCALE – A Horizon Europe project launched in 2025 that brings together partners from across Europe to build scalable, AI-ready data exploitation platforms for research infrastructures. EISCAT contributes its expertise in radar data integration with cloud and high-performance computing environments.

EISCAT is a participating beneficiary in the AARC TREE (Authentication and Authorisation for Research Collaboration – Technical Revision to Enhance Effectiveness) project, a Horizon Europe initiative focused on advancing federated Authentication and Authorisation Infrastructure (AAI) standards and interoperability for European research infrastructures. The project builds on the widely used AARC Blueprint Architecture to define updated technical and policy guidelines, deliver best-practice recommendations and strengthen federated access to data and services across diverse research communities.

Within AARC TREE’s consortium, EISCAT AB contributes to the collective effort of 18 organisations working to improve secure, interoperable access frameworks that support cross-infrastructure collaboration. Its participation helps ensure that EISCAT’s own research infrastructure and user communities can benefit from and align with evolving AAI best practices for international research collaboration.

EISCAT is a partner in the INPROCAP (“Building innovation procurement capabilities in Big Science”) project — a Horizon Europe initiative designed to strengthen innovation procurement practices across Europe’s large research infrastructures. The project brings together Industrial Liaison Officers and Big Science Organisations to develop advisory services, training and standardised tools that help engage innovative companies, particularly SMEs, in responding to procurement needs. Within this consortium, EISCAT AB helps identify its own innovation procurement needs and contributes to co-design dialogues with industry, ensuring that the Big Science ecosystem can tap into novel technological ideas and solutions. The project runs from June 2024 to May 2027 and supports broader efforts to make procurement of innovation a more effective and common practice within large scientific facilities.
