We are deeply saddened by the news from Finland that our long-time colleague and friend, Prof. Tauno Turunen passed away last Tuesday, 4 July 2023.

Tauno Turunen joined EISCAT already in 1984 as Assistant Director, a position he held until 1987. In 1998 he rejoined the Association, now as the EISCAT Director. He served as Director until end of 2002, when he returned to Sodankylä, Finland.

In 2003, he was awarded the Sir Granville Beynon medal “In recognition of important contributions to the techniques of Incoherent Scatter Radar and outstanding services to the EISCAT Scientific Association”.

The funeral service will be held in Sodankylä on 21 July 2023.

We will all miss Tauno. May he rest in peace
